The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
—Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)
Now that we are back on “standard” time, I get to experience the sun rising during the time that I have my quiet time each morning. Of course the time will get later as we approach the start of winter. Still, it is amazing. The sun always rises every morning, even when it is hidden behind clouds.
I love that the above verse is found in the middle of Lamentations. Most of this book is filled with Jeremiah lamenting over what has happened to Jerusalem and to his fellow Israelites. Jeremiah had a lot to be sad about. Jerusalem had been razed and most of the Israelites were dead or exiled.
Then we come to a number of “hope” verses in chapter 3. The above verse is full of promises from God: The love of God never stops. God’s mercies never come to an end and are new every morning. God is faithful.
When I am in the midst of challenging times, I can be refreshed by reading these hope verses in Lamentations. I can trust God. He is faithful. Even as the sun rises every morning, God gives me a “re-set” of new mercies every morning too. Knowing that refreshes my soul.
Even today, the day after an election, there is hope. But my hope is not in the result of this election. My hope is found in the faithfulness of God and in His love and mercy that is new every morning.
Prayer: Oh God, You are faithful. You refresh me every day. I depend on Your love and Your mercy that brings newness to my life. Thank You.
