Look, there on the mountains,
the feet of one who brings good news,
who proclaims peace!
–Nahum 1:15 (NIV)
Does anyone else like to get mail? I do. I always want something good in the mail. Something good would be an envelope with a check for 100 dollars or more! Reality… with that definition I very rarely get something “good.”
I do get good news, but not often in the mail. I remember learning about the news that my seventh grandchild was on the way. Good news. I remember from 41 years ago Debbie saying yes to my marriage proposal. Really good news.
Of course I have received bad news too. Less pleasant. Things breaking down; financial challenges; deaths of loved ones. I prefer getting good news.
When Nahum was prophesying against Nineveh his overall message was one of judgement. Nahum also shared the above verse with God’s people. He gave them hope.
Nahum told God’s people to look. They were to look up and see a person who brought good news of peace. In the midst of strife with an enemy, Nahum declared that good news of peace was coming.
Today, I am faced with lots of bad news. It comes from the media, through the mail, and over the phone.
In the midst of the strife of my world, I am reminded that I am to look for the message of good news. The best news is that Jesus continues to give me peace, even when the world looks bad.
Perhaps, God can also use my own feet to bring the good news of peace found in Jesus to my world. My world desperately needs that message.
Prayer: Father God, from Your perspective, everything is going to be all right. You are on Your throne. Jesus loves me and forgives me. May I not only look for the good news, but may I be Your tool to share the good news.
