Instituted by God

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

–Romans 13:1 (ESV)

I want to stay away from bad things. During my life I sometimes struggle. Still, with the help of God, I desire to please Him as my primary motivation. When I fail I confess my failures and amazingly am forgiven because of Jesus.

Many feel that politics is an evil that I should also stay away from. Many quote a secular statement of “separation of church and state” to justify Christians staying out of and avoiding governing authorities. In other words, for many Christians they release politics to a realm of darkness.

I cannot take that approach and be a follower of Jesus. The Bible is very clear that there is a role for governing authorities.

The above verse boldly declares that God instituted government. Wow. That places government with the family and the church as institutions created by God.

In other biblical passages I learn that government has the responsibility to punish the bad and promote the good. How can governing authorities know the difference between bad and good unless they are challenged with biblical truth?

I am now committed to pray, at a minimum, for our governing authorities. I also choose to engage them as persons who need to know Jesus, as shepherds who oversee people in their area, and as partners who potentially can support biblical truth and values.

For me, politics is not an evil but a mission field of people who need to know God.

Prayer: Lord God, You instituted government for Your plans and purposes. May I be used by You to influence governing authorities to know the good and the bad based on Your truth.
