Do I Believe Lies?

Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night
and stole him away while we were asleep.’

–Matthew 28:13 (ESV)

I really embrace telling the truth. I don’t want to lie. Sometimes, though, it is hard to know the truth.

Perhaps I should share an example. How about, “God is love”? I believe that, don’t you? Well, sometimes statements get complicated. What about, “Since God is love, God won’t send anyone to hell”?

The first statement is absolutely true. The second statement has some truth, but it has has a lie in it as well. I want to believe the whole thing, but because I follow God, I realize that the second part of the second statement is actually a lie.

Take a look at the word “TRUTH” I have attached. It is made up of lies. Complicated? You bet.

The most important truth in the world is the resurrection of Jesus. Christianity is a lie if the resurrection did not happen. If the resurrection did not happen then my life and everything I stand for is a house of cards.

It is no wonder that the chief priests told the soldiers who had guarded the tomb of Jesus to tell the lie as recording in Matthew 28:13. The chief priests knew that people would believe this lie.

How do I avoid believing lies, especially when it sounds like truth?

For me, I must seek God. I must seek truth. I must read God’s word. I must depend on the Holy Spirit. I must pray for wisdom and discernment. Truth matters. As I live in the world that is often full of lies and half-truths, it is more important than ever that I be diligent.

Prayer: Lord, I seek You. I seek Your truth. May You give me discernment to see lies so that I can embrace truth.
